Designed for beginning students, this course is aimed at developing skill in listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing Brazilian Portuguese. There is an emphasis on communication through intensive aural/oral practice and basic composition. The language is taught within the context of the cultures of Portuguese-speaking countries. During this semester there are units on Portugal, Angola and Mozambique, as well as Brazil. There are three class meetings and two laboratory sessions per week. While the scheduling for laboratory is flexible, you are expected to spend at least two hours per week in laboratory activity, working with Fabio Leite, the Portuguese Laboratory Assistant. His hours will be announced.
The text for the course is Travessia by John Tolman et al.(Georgetown University Press, 19880. There will be a test after each unit of the text. We will complete Units 1 through 5 during the semester. There will be an oral proficiency interview at the end of the semester. It will have one-half the value of a unit test. There will also be a final written examination. There maybe occasional (announced) quizzes as well. The final grade will be determined on the basis of the following scale:
